An extensive two-month voyage circling the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an older woman who was stranded by the cruise liner on a distant island.

Suzanne Rees had been walking on the tropical location with shipmates from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the group for a break. The ship departed without her and came back several hours later after the personnel became aware the lady was not present.

An extensive rescue mission found her body the following day.

Officials are investigating the incident, together with law enforcement and the state coroner.

Head of the cruise operator stated that travelers and crew on the ship were notified that the continuation of the cruise had been called off due to the "tragic passing and previous mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he added that passengers would be provided a total repayment, and said the organization was working "to arrange the travel back of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Officials also released an revised announcement, and said they had "provided a order to the Captain" prohibiting any further travelers from boarding the ship.

The representative said that they would visit the liner in Cairns upon its return.

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a extremely warm day, and she took sick on the mountain ascent," she stated.

"They requested her to head down, without accompaniment. Then the boat sailed away, apparently without doing a roll call.

"At some stage in that sequence, or not long after, she died, without company."
