Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
